NATIVE PLANTS AND ANIMALS
Native plants and animals are everywhere in the City of Los Angeles. California is a biodiversity hotspot recognized by scholars worldwide, and many diverse plant and animals can be found only in our area. Natural vegetated areas can provide water purification, air cleansing, erosion control, carbon storage, moderate recreation, genetic diversity, and wildlife habitat. Native plants generally support many times as many species of native wildlife as non-native plants. But ecosystems can become fragmented as a result of land development. Today, one third of California's native plants are rare, endangered, or threatened. Less than 10% of California's original coastal sage scrub land and less than 1% of native grassland remain intact. Habitats in small, isolated land areas may not survive disturbances.
