Los Angeles police are alerting the public to a troubling wave of thefts targeting elderly residents in the San Fernando Valley. A group of thieves, described as highly skilled and operating with practiced precision, has allegedly stolen jewelry from over 140 victims using sleight-of-hand techniques that involve distraction and deception.
According to investigators, the suspects—believed to have Eastern European accents based on victim reports—initiate contact by engaging their targets in friendly, casual conversation. Often pretending to ask for directions or complimenting the victims, they use the opportunity to subtly remove valuable jewelry and replace it with fake items. The switch happens so quickly that victims often don’t realize anything is wrong until much later.
“This is particularly sensitive to me and close to my heart as my mother-in-law, who lives in Orange County, was a victim of this three years ago,” said LAPD Captain Aaron Ponce, underscoring the personal impact of the crime.
Authorities say the suspects usually flee in either a black or white SUV immediately after completing the theft. Surveillance images released by LAPD show two of the individuals believed to be involved, though the investigation into their identities and broader operation is ongoing.
Detective Luz Montero explained the method: “It just depends on how the conversation goes. If the victim walks up to the vehicle, the exchange is done in seconds. The victims never feel it. That’s how good they are.”
The LAPD is urging residents, especially those with elderly family members, to talk about the scam and encourage heightened awareness. “Pay attention to your surroundings,” said LAPD Lieutenant Samer Issa. “Look out for individuals or vehicles that may be following you. Avoid engaging with strangers who approach you in a vehicle or on foot. If you do speak with them, maintain your distance.”
Police emphasized that this type of crime is particularly cruel, as it preys on trust and human kindness, using those very qualities to victimize some of the most vulnerable members of the community. Officers are asking anyone who may have encountered a similar situation or recognizes the suspects from the surveillance footage to come forward.
The case is still under investigation, and LAPD is working to determine whether the group may be linked to similar scams in other areas. Community members are encouraged to report any suspicious behavior and stay vigilant to prevent further incidents.
